We sell all three, so we don’t care which one you buy — we care that it works. Here’s the honest physics of each.
We sell all three of these. Air cannons, industrial vibrators and sonic horns are all on our shelves and all installed by our crews — so we have no reason to steer you toward the wrong one. And plants buy the wrong one constantly, because each device gets marketed as the universal fix when each is actually a specialist. The honest version: the material decides, not the brochure. Particle size, moisture and where the buildup forms will pick the tool for you — this guide just makes the logic visible.
An air cannon stores compressed air (typically 70–100 psi) and releases the whole tank in milliseconds through a nozzle aimed at the buildup. It is a discrete, high-force blast delivered exactly where you point it. (Full physics in our guide: How Air Cannons Work.)
A vibrator bolts to the wall of a hopper, chute, screen or railcar and shakes it — transmitting vibration through the structure into the material so friction lets go and flow continues. Simple, cheap, and everywhere for a reason.
A sonic horn (acoustic cleaner) uses plant air across a diaphragm to generate a powerful low-frequency tone — typically in the 60–420 Hz range — that floods the entire gas space of a vessel. The pressure waves flex and shear light, dry particulate off every surface at once, usually sounding for a few seconds every several minutes. We supply and install these too, most often in power and cement service.

Plenty of plants run all three: horns keeping the fine dust from ever establishing, cannons on the zones that bridge, vibrators on the chutes and screens. Flow aids are a system, not a religion. Start from the material, and the budget usually follows the physics.
A vibrator, by purchase price. But cheapest to buy and cheapest to own diverge fast: a vibrator misapplied to fine cohesive powder compacts the bin and buys you a cleaning bill, and an undersized fix of any type costs you the downtime it failed to prevent. Match the tool to the material first, then compare prices among the tools that actually fit.
Only if your buildup is light, dry and fine. Horns excel at keeping dry dust from establishing across a whole vessel; they cannot break a wet bridge or dense accretion. Many vessels run both — horns for the film, cannons for the zones that bridge.
Correctly sized and channel-mounted, no — vibrators run for decades. Damage comes from oversizing and bad mounts concentrating stress in the wall. And never vibrate a bin that is not discharging: on fine cohesive material you are compacting it, not helping it.
Loud — it is an industrial horn generating a powerful low-frequency tone, typically sounded for a few seconds every several minutes. Placement and sounding schedules are planned around personnel areas as part of the installation.
Yes — that is the visit to book. Vessel geometry, the material's particle size and moisture, and where the buildup forms decide the answer. Because we supply all three devices, the recommendation is the physics, not the catalog.
