About the role

The Mechanic position at ACT calls for a wide range of skills, with a concentration on component installation. Our mechanics install all types of machinery that come with a manual — pumps, air cannons, and conveyor components such as belt cleaners. Welding ability is not required for this position; however, basic welding skills help with quick, clean repairs and difficult installations. Mechanics work from an assigned task under the guidance of a Working Supervisor, defer to the lead-man on installation decisions, keep communication channels open, and always ask for help when needed.

The position customizes belts and rubber components to customer requirements, and also covers non-belt duties: general mechanical work, metal fabrication, and general supervision. In addition, the Vulcanizing/Belt Technician performs all corrective and preventive maintenance on rubber and PVC belting. Work varies from industry to industry, but the skills below apply in every aspect of the job.

What you’ll do

  • Perform lap and finger splicing efficiently
  • Also fabricate, install, vulcanize, and repair heavyweight conveyor belting and other rubber products
  • Service and maintain customer conveyor systems
  • In addition, assist with installation and repair of mechanical components, including welding repairs
  • Read and work from design drawings and instruction manuals, using industry tooling and equipment
  • Keep the job site clean and safe — for example, clear trash, keep tools out of walkways, and hang electrical cords out of the way
  • Additionally, complete a JSA/JHA for each task, and maintain MSHA Part 46/48 and OSHA 10 compliance
  • Detect and report defective equipment, improper operations, and unusual conditions to management
  • Likewise, interface with the customer to ensure satisfaction in every aspect of the job
  • Recommend product and process improvements, as well as provide operator training to coworkers on service calls
  • Assist with construction-type work involving removal or installation of equipment
  • Finally, complete all required safety training within required timeframes (MSHA 48, OSHA 30), and perform other duties as assigned
  • Above all, arrive on-site ready to work, in clean and professional attire

What you’ll need

  • MSHA Part 48 or equivalent, as well as OSHA 10 or equivalent
  • Also a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean MVR
  • In addition, willingness to work overtime and weekends when required
  • Ability to travel to out-of-town jobs, sometimes weeks at a time — because travel is a must
  • Strength to pull, push, grasp, bend, lift, and carry up to 75 pounds regularly, plus work at heights and in unusual positions
  • Above all, passion for safety and willingness to promote all safety procedures — the company provides all required safety training
  • Finally, commitment to excellence, flexibility for special projects, and a team-first attitude
