What’s on the shelf

What lagging actually does

Lagging is the pulley’s tire: it grips the belt, sheds water and carryback, and takes the wear the bare steel shell would otherwise eat. Worn or missing lagging turns a drive pulley into a belt polisher — slipping under load, burning cover off the belt, and squealing about it the whole time.

  • Plain rubber — general service, non-drive pulleys.
  • Grooved rubber — drive pulleys, wet service: grooves channel water and fines out of the grip.
  • Ceramic — maximum grip and wear life for hard-worked drives; the answer when rubber keeps wearing through.

Slipping belt checklist

Before buying a bigger motor: check lagging condition, take-up travel and tension, and carryback buildup on the pulley face. Nine times out of ten the fix is grip, not power.

Ordering checklist

  • Diameter and face width — measure the old one, or belt width + 2″ minimum face
  • Shaft — diameter, and bushing system (XT, QD, taper-lock)
  • Position — drive, head, tail, snub, take-up — picks crown and lagging
  • Lagging — rubber (plain/grooved) or ceramic (dimpled/smooth)
  • Nameplate or drawing of the old pulley if it’s a swap

Frequently asked questions

How do I spec a replacement pulley?

Face width, diameter, shaft diameter and hub/bushing style — off the drawing or the old pulley. Send what you have; we’ll fill the gaps.

Can lagging be replaced without replacing the pulley?

Often yes — re-lagging a sound pulley is routine and far cheaper than a new assembly. A cracked shell or worn journals means replacement.

What causes lagging to wear out fast?

Carryback grinding between belt and pulley is the usual killer — which makes belt cleaners a pulley-protection device too. Fix the carryback and the lagging lasts.
