Belt cleaners

Cleaner systems and retrofit blades for most major frames.

3 min readUpdated Aug 2026

What’s on the shelf

Complete cleaner systems and the blades that keep them working: the Uni-Blade, plus retrofit replacement blades for most major manufacturers — Martin® Engineering, American Eagle, ASGCO™, Argonics®, Flexco®, ARCH®, Superior®, Benetech® and MATO. Primary pre-cleaners, secondary cleaners and brush cleaners for the belts that need all three.

Getting cleaning right

  • Position matters. Primary at the head pulley face, secondary just behind it — each catches what the other misses.
  • Tension is everything. An under-tensioned cleaner polishes carryback; an over-tensioned one eats blades and belt. Re-tension on a schedule.
  • Blades are consumables. Budget them like gloves, not like capital. Retrofit blades keep your existing frames working.
  • Match blade to belt. Urethane grades and metal-tipped blades suit different belts, splices and materials — tell us what is running.

The carryback test

Look under the return run. Piles forming below the conveyor are material that paid to ride the belt twice and landed on your cleanup budget. A properly selected, properly tensioned cleaner puts it back in the product stream.

Choosing a cleaner, position by position

PositionWhere it mountsWhat it removesTypical blade
Primary (pre-cleaner)On the head pulley face, just below the material trajectoryThe heavy layer — 60–90% of carrybackUrethane, positive-rake
SecondaryJust behind the head pulley, against the flat of the beltThe film the primary leavesUrethane or metal-tipped
Tertiary / brushFurther down the return runFines and damp residue on demanding beltsRotating brush or scavenger blade

Wet, sticky or fine material almost always earns primary plus secondary. Metal-tipped secondaries excel on vulcanized belts — on mechanical splices, spec splice-friendly blades instead.

Troubleshooting quick reference

SymptomLikely causeFix
Carryback persistsBlade worn out, under-tensioned, or wrong grade for the materialRe-blade, re-tension to spec, review blade grade
Blade chatter / squealOver-tensioned, or belt cover damage bouncing the bladeBack tension off to spec; inspect belt surface
Blade wearing on one endCleaner not square to the belt, or belt mistrackingRe-square the frame; fix tracking first
Splice snaggingAggressive or metal blade over a mechanical spliceSwitch to splice-friendly blade; check splice condition
Blades dying in weeksOver-tension, hot material beyond blade rating, or abrasive finesVerify tension and temperature; move up a blade grade

Ordering checklist

  • Belt width and belt speed
  • Position — primary, secondary or both
  • Existing frame brand and model (a photo of the frame and blade works)
  • Splice type — vulcanized or mechanical (this picks the blade family)
  • Material and temperature — hot, oily or abrasive material changes the urethane grade

Frequently asked questions

Will your blades fit my Martin/Flexco/ASGCO frame?

That is exactly what the retrofit line is for — direct replacement blades for most major frames. Send the frame model or a photo and we’ll confirm.

How often should blades be changed?

By wear, not calendar — but if you’re changing primary blades more than every few months, look at tension, blade grade or belt condition. We can put cleaners on a scheduled re-blade route.

One cleaner or two?

Wet, sticky or fine material almost always justifies primary plus secondary. Dry, coarse material sometimes gets by with a primary alone. The carryback under your conveyor is the honest answer.
