Idlers

CEMA B–F idlers in stock — steel and composite, matched to the load.

3 min readUpdated Aug 2026

What’s on the shelf

Douglas Manufacturing idlers in most common belt sizes — CEMA B, C and D — plus Enduride composite idlers, MSHA approved across CEMA C, D, E and F, including the One-Man Idler line and MSHA-recommended safety netting. Troughing, return, impact and self-aligning styles; garland sets and impact beds for load zones.

CEMA classes in plain terms

CEMA ratings (B through F) set the bearing, shaft and shell an idler is built around — roughly, light plant duty up through the heaviest mining and port service. Matching class to load matters more than brand: an underclassed idler is a scheduled failure, an overclassed one wasted money. Send us belt width, material density and lump size and the class picks itself.

Why crews like composites

  • Light enough for one technician — the One-Man Idler makes roll changes a one-person job in place.
  • No corrosion, less spark risk — composite shells shrug off wet and corrosive service.
  • Quieter running — noticeable on long overland runs.

The seized-roll rule

A stopped roll under a moving belt is a friction heater and a belt-wear machine. Listen on the weekly walkdown: screeching today is seized this month — and rolls are cheap compared to belts.

CEMA classes at a glance

ClassTypical serviceCommon roll diameters
CEMA BLight duty — package and light plant conveyors4″–5″
CEMA CMedium duty — aggregate, general industry4″–6″
CEMA DMedium-heavy — higher tonnage, wider belts5″–6″
CEMA EHeavy duty — mining, high tonnage6″–7″
CEMA FHeaviest — large mining and port service7″+

The class sets bearing, shaft and shell together — matching class to load matters more than brand. Send belt width, material density, lump size and belt speed and the class picks itself.

Styles, decoded

  • Troughing idlers (20°, 35°, 45°) carry the loaded side; steeper trough = more capacity on the same belt.
  • Impact idlers / impact beds live under the load zone and absorb what falls — the cheapest belt insurance there is.
  • Return idlers support the empty side; rubber-disc returns shed sticky carryback that cakes plain steel rolls.
  • Self-aligning idlers steer a wandering belt back to center — a correction, not a substitute for fixing the cause.
  • Garland (catenary) sets hang flexible strings in heavy impact zones.

Ordering checklist

  • CEMA class (or belt width + material + speed and we’ll set it)
  • Belt width and trough angle (20°/35°/45°)
  • Roll diameter and frame style — inline or offset, standard or low profile
  • Frame tag photo if replacing like-for-like — fastest match there is
  • Environment — wet, corrosive or high-noise service points to composite

Frequently asked questions

How do I identify the idler I need to replace?

Frame tag photo plus belt width and trough angle usually nails it. No tag? Measure roll diameter, roll length and frame drop — we’ll match it.

Steel or composite?

Composite wins on weight, corrosion and maintenance labor; steel remains fine in dry, heavy standard duty. On high or awkward runs, the one-person roll change usually decides it.

Do you stock impact beds?

Yes — impact beds and garland sets for load zones, where sealing and belt life are won or lost.
