Combustible dust reviews, venting and isolation — a straight read of where you stand.
Combustible dust safety for dust collection and handling systems: NFPA-aligned reviews of existing equipment, explosion venting, isolation and suppression hardware, and the corrections that bring a system into line. Wood, grain, coal, many chemicals and metals — if your process makes fine dust, combustibility is a question with a testable answer.
One visit: what dust you make, where it accumulates, what your collectors have (and lack), and a prioritized correction list. No scare tactics — a straight read of where you stand.
| Blind spot | The exposure | What closes it |
|---|---|---|
| “Our dust isn’t explosive” | Most organic and many metal dusts are — wood, grain, sugar, resins, aluminum | Dust testing (Kst, Pmax) — data, not opinion |
| No DHA on file | NFPA requires a Dust Hazard Analysis — insurers and OSHA ask for it by name | A documented DHA with an action plan |
| Collector with no venting/isolation | The collector is the most common ignition home | Explosion vents, chemical/mechanical isolation, spark detection |
| Dust layers on beams and ledges | Secondary explosion fuel — the one that levels buildings | Housekeeping program with measurable limits |
| “Grandfathered” equipment | NFPA 660 doesn’t grandfather hazards | Gap assessment against current code |
Many industrial dusts are. Combustibility and severity are established by laboratory testing (Kst, Pmax) — and those values drive venting and isolation design. If there is no test on file, that is the first step.
Yes — hazard doesn’t grandfather. Reviews frequently find legacy collectors needing venting, relocation or isolation. Corrections are usually staged by risk.
We review, specify, supply and install — venting, isolation valves and suppression, integrated with the collector and ductwork work our crews already do.
Reading about it is free. So is the phone call. Some answers only come from climbing into the equipment — that’s the part we do in person. Tell us the plant, the part and the problem, and you’ll get a real person.
