What this service covers

Combustible dust safety for dust collection and handling systems: NFPA-aligned reviews of existing equipment, explosion venting, isolation and suppression hardware, and the corrections that bring a system into line. Wood, grain, coal, many chemicals and metals — if your process makes fine dust, combustibility is a question with a testable answer.

Where plants get caught

  • A collector installed before anyone asked the question. No venting, no isolation, located against the building.
  • Ductwork that connects everything to everything. Without isolation, one event propagates system-wide.
  • Housekeeping dust. Fugitive layers on beams and equipment are fuel; mitigation and ventilation shrink them.
  • No dust test on file. Kst and Pmax values drive the whole design. Testing is step one.

How compliance actually proceeds

  • 1. Test the dust — explosibility parameters from your actual material.
  • 2. DHA — walk every process handling combustible dust, document the hazards and controls.
  • 3. Prioritized fixes — venting, isolation, grounding, housekeeping — sequenced by risk, not by invoice size.
  • 4. Documentation — the binder that turns an inspection from an ordeal into a meeting.

Frequently asked questions

Is my dust combustible?

Many industrial dusts are. Combustibility and severity are established by laboratory testing (Kst, Pmax) — and those values drive venting and isolation design. If there is no test on file, that is the first step.

Does this apply to old equipment?

Yes — hazard doesn’t grandfather. Reviews frequently find legacy collectors needing venting, relocation or isolation. Corrections are usually staged by risk.

Do you supply the protection hardware?

We review, specify, supply and install — venting, isolation valves and suppression, integrated with the collector and ductwork work our crews already do.
