Explosion Protection (NFPA)

Combustible dust deflagration venting, isolation, suppression, and spark detection — engineered, supplied, and installed by The ACT Group with certified Boss Products hardware, to the NFPA 68/69/660 standards.

If your process creates combustible dust — wood, grain, sugar, metals, plastics, coal — your dust collection system is also an explosion hazard, and OSHA and your insurer both know it. Explosion protection is engineered into the system under the NFPA standards, and The ACT Group now designs, supplies, and installs it as part of our industrial ventilation services, featuring certified hardware from Boss Products.

What the NFPA standards require

The rules are consolidating under one roof — NFPA 660, the new combined combustible dust standard — but the engineering obligations you'll recognize come from these classics:

NFPA 68 — Deflagration Venting

If a vessel can see a deflagration, it needs engineered pressure relief: explosion vent panels sized to the vessel, the dust’s Kst, and the discharge path — or flameless vents when the equipment lives indoors.

NFPA 69 — Prevention & Isolation

An explosion in the collector must not propagate back into the building. Passive isolation valves, chemical isolation, and suppression systems break the path between connected equipment.

NFPA 660 — The New Umbrella

The consolidated combustible dust standard rolls the commodity-specific rules into one document — and makes the Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) cycle impossible to ignore.

Layered protection, done in the right order

1. Prevent & Detect

Spark detection and extinguishing kills ignition sources in the duct before they reach the collector. Abort gates dump burning material out of the airstream.

2. Isolate

Passive flap valves, no-return valves, and diverters — or active chemical isolation — stop an event from traveling the ductwork into occupied space.

3. Vent or Suppress

Certified vent panels give the explosion a safe way out; flameless vents do it indoors; active suppression kills it inside the vessel in milliseconds.

Our Partner: Boss Products

NFPA compliant. FM approved. UL certified.

The ACT Group is proud to offer the Boss Products line of fire and explosion mitigation systems — from VIGILEX® vent panels and VigiFlap™ isolation valves to Raptor™ suppression, spark detection, and abort gates. We pair their certified hardware with our dust collection evaluation, system design, and installation crews, so your protection is engineered as a system — not bolted on as an afterthought.
