Engineered Dust Suppression by The ACT Group

Fugitive dust is more than a nuisance — it is a health hazard, a fire and explosion risk, a source of equipment wear and impaired visibility, and a costly cleanup burden that strains relations with your neighbors. MSHA defines dust as “finely divided solids that may become airborne from their original state without any chemical or physical change other than fracture.” Left unaddressed, the cost of escaping dust is ongoing and extreme.

Dust suppression is the engineered answer: capturing airborne dust and returning it to the product stream, or wetting material so dust never goes airborne in the first place. Moisture increases the cohesiveness of fine particles so they stay with the load instead of drifting away on air currents — and a strategic program that both contains and suppresses dust has been proven to pay for itself, time and again.

The Science: Droplet Size Decides Everything

Dust generation is proportional to air velocity divided by particle size and material cohesiveness. Suppression attacks the last two — but only if the droplet matches the dust. Oversized droplets let dust ride the air streamlines right around them; undersized droplets evaporate before they connect. Research at the Colorado School of Mines showed why garden-hose wetting fails: typical spray droplets run 200–600 microns while respirable dust is under 5. ACT systems atomize water below 10 microns — a size electrostatically drawn to PM10 particles through Van der Waals forces. Dust and droplet combine, become heavier than air, and fall back into your product.

Four Ways We Kill Dust

High Pressure Fog & Spray

Water filtered, treated, and compressed past 1,000 PSI through precision brass and stainless nozzles with 0.008” orifices. Fog for confined areas; wind-resistant spray for truck dumps, open hoppers, head chutes, crushers, and train dumps.

Low Pressure Fog

50–150 PSI systems for applications where higher water volume is acceptable — filtered through 100-mesh strainers to keep nozzles clear and maintenance low.

Fog Cannons & Spray Rings

Cannons throw mist 165 feet across a 180° arc for stockpiles and loadout — buy or rent. Custom spray rings from 12” to 72” wet material right at the transfer point, installed by our own crews.

Foam & Surfactant

Surfactants cut water’s surface tension from 72.6 to ~28 dyne/cm; add pressurized air and foam expands coverage 60–80x with a blanketing, residual effect. Agents available for haul roads and flotation-compatible processing.

Custom-Engineered, Built In-House

Every system is engineered for its application and fabricated in our 10,000 sq ft Fontana facility — steel, piping, electrical, and controls under one roof, running in hand, automatic, or remote mode with PLC tie-in. A recent example: the skid-mounted HPDS-56 we engineered for Granite Construction — 5 HP, 6.1 GPM, single zone at 750 PSI, delivered with full controls, alarms, and an operator’s manual.

Dust Suppression FAQs

How much moisture does suppression add to my product?

Typically under 1% by weight with high pressure fog — enough to suppress dust without pushing product out of moisture spec.

What’s the difference between fog and spray?

Fog (sub-10-micron droplets) excels in confined areas but drifts in wind. Spray uses slightly larger droplets that hold up at truck dumps, crushers, and open transfer points.

Is suppression different from dust collection?

Yes. Collection captures airborne dust with fans, ducting, and baghouse filters; suppression keeps dust from going airborne at all. Many plants need both — ACT engineers both.

Do surfactants affect mineral processing?

Our wetting and foaming agents are formulated to be compatible with flotation-based mineral separation.

Can I rent equipment instead of buying?
