Ordering belt without surprises

• Have the spec ready: width, ply and rating, cover thicknesses (top × bottom), overall length, splice preference, material carried.
• Grade matters: Grade 1 covers for abrasion, Grade 2 for general service, MOR for oil, Spectrum-Heat for hot material.
• Install and splice included if you want them — belt, crew and press from one call, old belt rolled and disposed.

Belt aging: what the wear pattern tells you

• Top cover thinning evenly — honest wear; plan replacement by the mil, not by surprise.
• Grooves down the middle — a skirting or cleaner problem filing the belt (fix that first, or the new belt inherits it).
• Edge shredding — mistracking, not belt quality. New belt, same problem, unless tracked.
• Cracking / crazing covers — heat or ozone aging; check ratings against reality.
• Cupping — cover wear ratio gone; a cupped belt can’t seal, track, or clean properly.

Ordering checklist

• Width and length — center-to-center distance × ~2, plus splice allowance
• Rating — PIW or ply count (nameplate, old invoice, or we measure)
• Covers — top × bottom thickness and grade
• Material and temperature — picks the compound
• Splice plan — vulcanized or mechanical changes the length math
