Conveyor belt care

Splicing methods compared, why belts mistrack, what carryback really costs, and the weekly walkdown that prevents most belt emergencies.

Splicing: vulcanized, mechanical, or finger

Every conveyor belt is a loop, and the splice is where the loop closes — and where it fails first if the job is done poorly. The three methods:

A vulcanized splice is only as good as its preparation — ply-line accuracy, clean bias cuts, correct cure temperature and time. Belt tracking

A belt that wanders grinds its edges off against the structure, spills material along its whole length, and eventually destroys itself. Mistracking is a symptom; the causes are nearly always one of these:

  • Off-center loading — material landing on one side steers the belt the other way.
  • Buildup on rollers and pulleys — a crowned lump of carryback on a pulley face steers the belt every revolution.
  • Out-of-square structure — idlers and pulleys not perpendicular to the belt line.
  • A bad splice — a splice cut out of square puts a permanent steering input into the loop.

Fix the cause first; then, on belts that still fight tracking (reversing conveyors especially), a belt-alignment device like the Tracker™ continually steers the belt back to center. Chasing tracking by knocking idlers is a treadmill, not a fix.

Carryback — the slow leak

Carryback is the material that sticks to the belt past the discharge and drops off along the return run. It piles under the conveyor as cleanup labor, grinds into idlers and pulleys as premature wear, and shows up in safety walkdowns as housekeeping citations. The fix is a properly selected and — critically — properly tensioned cleaner system: a primary pre-cleaner at the head pulley, a secondary cleaner behind it, and on demanding belts a tertiary or brush cleaner. Blades are consumables; ACT stocks retrofit blades for most major cleaner brands and re-tensions and re-blades cleaners on scheduled routes.

Transfer points: a system, not a parts list

Almost everything that goes wrong on a conveyor goes wrong at the transfer point. The components lean on each other: skirting seals the load zone only if belt support underneath gives it something to press against; sealing works only if the belt runs centered; and cleaners keep the belt surface clean enough for all of it. The design intent worth remembering: skirting should seal, not plow — rubber soft enough to conform without grooving the belt, clamps that hold adjustment, and support (impact beds or garland idlers) under the loading area.

Idlers & pulleys, briefly

CEMA ratings (B through F) set the bearing, shaft and shell an idler is built around — roughly, light plant duty up through the heaviest mining service. Matching class to load matters more than brand. A seized roller is not just a part failure: it is a friction heater under a moving rubber belt and a belt-wear machine. Composite idlers (like Enduride’s One-Man Idler line, MSHA approved, CEMA C–F) cut roll weight enough that one technician can change them in place. On pulleys, worn lagging is what turns a drive pulley into a belt polisher — slipping under load and burning belt cover.

The weekly walkdown

  • Splices: edge cracking, pulled fasteners, skive lifting.
  • Belt edges: fraying or rubber dust on the structure means tracking trouble.
  • Rollers: listen — a screeching or stopped roll today is a seized roll this month.
  • Head pulley: cleaner blade contact and tension; carryback piles starting under the return.
  • Load zone: skirting gap, spillage, belt sag between idlers.
  • Take-up: position and travel left — a take-up at end of travel means the belt has stretched or the splice is creeping.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a conveyor belt last?

Anywhere from a couple of years to well over a decade — the spread is that wide because belt life is mostly determined by what surrounds the belt: loading design, tracking, cleaner performance and idler condition. The belt itself is usually the victim, not the culprit.

Vulcanized or mechanical splice — which should I choose?

Vulcanized for high-tension, long-life belts where downtime for a controlled cure is affordable; mechanical when speed matters, on belts that change frequently, or for emergency repairs. We stock and install both and will tell you honestly which your conveyor needs — including the Superscrew®, a screwed fastener as strong as a vulcanized splice.

Can you splice a belt in an emergency, at night?

What belting does ACT stock?

Why does my belt keep mistracking after we adjust it?

Because adjusting idlers treats the symptom. Persistent mistracking is almost always off-center loading, buildup on a pulley face, an out-of-square frame, or a bad splice. Find and fix the steering input, then use a tracker device for belts (especially reversing belts) that still need continuous correction.
